Proteolysis and epileptogenesis

Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by the occurrence of seizures as a reflection of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The excessive electrical activity in neurons of the brain may be the result of a brain injury or a genetic mutation. The process of brain transformation due to a brain injury or genetic mutation leading to the occurrence of spontaneous recurrent seizures is known as epileptogenesis. We will explore some of the mechanisms promoting the transformation of a normal brain into an epileptic one. The focus will be on the use of rodent models of epilepsy to study the role of proteolysis on the regulation of neuronal proteins during epileptogenesis.
