UC Davis Launches “Words of Affirmation” Campaign to Welcome Incoming Students

Celebrating 35 years of the Principles of Community

As part of the 35th anniversary of the UC Davis Principles of Community, a new university-wide campaign is inviting graduating students to share encouragement and support with those just beginning their UC Davis journey.

The Words of Affirmation campaign asks graduates to reflect on their time at UC Davis and offer a short message to incoming students—something they wish they’d heard when they first arrived, or words that helped them feel seen, valued, or supported. These messages will be shared through welcome events, digital displays, and university communications to help incoming students feel a sense of connection and belonging from the start.

"Students may have heard about the Principles of Community, but now they can engage directly to share them with others who will be able to feel the Principles," said Renetta Tull, Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. "This campaign allows students to share the UC Davis spirit of kindness; it’s an example of our community lifting one another up.

Graduating students can submit their message through a brief online survey. A promotional toolkit is also being shared with campus communicators to help spread the word.
