Javier Zamora’s ‘Solito: A Memoir’ is 24th Selection
The UC Davis Campus Community Book Project has selected Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora as its 2025–26 title, aligning with the theme of belonging. The bestselling memoir recounts Zamora’s harrowing 3,000-mile journey from El Salvador to the United States at just 9 years old, traveling alone to reunite with his parents.
Agnes Stark, continuing lecturer at the UC Davis Writing Center and book selection committee member, said she hopes Solito will encourage dialogue around immigration, identity, and what it means to be American. “Most of us don’t have to risk our lives to find safety or belong to a nation,” she said. “Reading Solito together opens space for reflection on undocumented status and the immigrant experience.”
The book’s selection also honors the 35th anniversary of UC Davis’s Principles of Community, promoting discussion around dignity, respect, and understanding. Zamora will speak at the Mondavi Center on March 10, 2026. Those interested in helping plan related events are encouraged to join the programming committee.
Organizers are now accepting nominations for the 2026–27 theme of civil liberties, which will mark the 25th year of the book project.
