Join us for a book talk of Good Boys, Bad Hombres: The Racial Politics of Mentoring Latino Boys in Schools by CAMPSSAH scholar Michael V. Singh. Lunch will be provided to participants.

In Good Boys, Bad Hombres, Michael V. Singh examines the empowerment of Latino boys in schools, contrasting it with the politics of punishment they often face. Based on two years of research in a California school district, he analyzes the Latino Male Success mentorship program, which promotes a traditional vision of masculinity. Singh critiques this approach as rooted in neoliberal multiculturalism and anti-Blackness, arguing that it can reinforce negative stereotypes. He advocates for new narratives and practices that challenge patriarchal norms and reimagine Latino manhood beyond the need for control.
Michael V. Singh is an assistant professor in Chicana/o/x Studies, focusing on race, gender, and education. He earned his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2019 and was a UC President's Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Santa Barbara. He is researching how race, gender, and sexuality affect Latino K-12 teachers' practices, contributing to the discourse on boys and young men of color and promoting justice-centered education.
