Healthy Davis Together with Dr. Brad Pollock (Lunch with an Expert) | 12:00 PM

Join us for an hour of learning with expert Brad Pollock, M.P.H., Ph.D., who will share insight on Healthy Davis Together, a campus-community effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by providing resources that are inclusive and accessible to all. Healthy Davis Together is a joint project between the City of Davis and UC Davis to facilitate a coordinated and gradual return while preventing the spread of COVID-19. It is founded on the belief that one of strengths of the Davis community is our ability to come together to support our community and one another. Dr. Pollock serves as Arline Miller Rolkin Chair in Public Health Sciences in the Department of Public Health Sciences and Associate Dean of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine. This event is the first installment of the "Lunch with an Expert" series and part of the 2021 Principles of Community Week.

Film Screening "Picture a Scientist" | 6:00 PM

PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

[Faculty Workshop] Making the Invisible Visible: Using Cognitive Apprenticeship to Engage Students in Disciplinary Discourse | 1:00 PM

As disciplinary experts, academics read, write, and think about concepts in ways that are particular to our field of study. These discursive practices often become automatic and invisible to us, which can make teaching them to students a challenge. [Faculty Workshop] Formative Feedback to Engage Students in High-Enrollment Classes | 12:10 PM

Providing meaningful feedback is one way to engage students in classes, especially during remote learning. Doing so in high-enrollment classes presents additional challenges. In this workshop, Dr. Rucha Joshi (Biomedical Engineering) shares the system she developed to provide formative feedback to students in online classes. Dr. Joshi will describe characterizations of feedback along multiple dimensions, such as dialogic iterative cycles, personalized, goal-directed, immediate, in written format, and having a peer assessment component. She will share results of her implementation of this system and give participants an opportunity to adapt the tools for their own classes. POWER TO HEAL is an hour-long public television documentary that tells a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is the tale of how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country in a matter of months. 4pm-5:30pm

2/24 Film Screening: Dolores Huerta - Free
Dolores, the new documentary directed by Peter Bratt in theaters this month celebrates the force that is Dolores Huerta, the labor organizer and political activist who worked tirelessly on behalf of some of the most poverty stricken workers in the country. Amongst union organizers and political activists, Dolores Huerta is a legend. Yet she is virtually unknown to the public. Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) with Cesar Chavez. They were equal partners in the movement in every way except how history remembers their contributions. This is true even of the slogan “Si, se puede!” Dolores was a feminist as well as a environmental civil rights activist. She fought for pesticides to be put away for the amount of deaths they were causing and she was a single mom with children sacrificing to fight and lead with a passion for the rights of others. 4:00pm - 5:30pm Free Swag to the first 10 to register!
