Timeline of the GRLN Initiative

  • 2014: Campus creates “Preferred Name” field in the campus directory for students, which appeared in Canvas and class rosters.
  • January 2018: Staff Diversity Administrative Advisory Committee (SDAAC) meeting with Chancellor May included a presentation on current limited gender identity options in data collection for staff and the need for lived name field for employees.
  • March 2018: After discussions with the director of the LGBTQIA+ Resource Center, and leaders from SDAAC and Staff Assembly, the UC Davis change management liaison to UC Path advocates for lived name field and non-binary gender marker to be included in upcoming UC Path system updates.
  • March 2019: Chancellor authorized the creation of a task force to develop recommendations for the successful implementation of lived name and gender marker fields for students, faculty, staff, alumni and patients in the appropriate data systems, policies, and practices across the university.
  • May 2019: LNGM Task Force launched.
  • Fall 2019: UC Path includes “Preferred Name” field for employees and more expansive gender identities.
  • March 2020: LNGM Task Force Report was presented to the chancellor and campus leadership (insert link to report). The chancellor approved LNGM Report recommendations and charged the creation of an implementation committee
  • September 2020: Launched LNGM Implementation Committee with four working groups: Policy & Practice, IT/Data, Communications, Awareness & Training
  • November 2020: UC Office of the President issues Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy
  • April 2021: LNGM Implementation Committee leaders present a proposal to the IET Student Technology Governance Committee to fund a project manager and business analyst to support the technical implementation of lived name across the entire campus.
  • May 2021: Daily Symptom Survey implemented field for lived name. Story of why this is so important.
  • June 2021:The LGBTQIA+ Resource Center hosted a LNGM Community Forum to provide updates on campus progress and collect feedback.
  • June 2021: Zoom Display Name enabled. This allowed campus community members to update their display name in Zoom just once. Previously folks’ dead names were being automatically pulled in, and they had to update display name for each Zoom meeting.
  • July 2021: UC Davis Health IT hired a project manager to oversee the technical implementation of lived name and gender identity in the Health campus systems.
  • September 2021: Daily Symptom Survey Education on how to update lived name, pronouns, and gender identity
  • September 2021: Lived Name Gender Marker Training presentation by Diversity Education and Training, DEI
  • October 2021: HR launched the Resources for Trans and Non-binary Employees webpage
  • Fall 2021: UC Davis Health IT commences assessment of IT systems to prepare for implementation.
  • November 2021: Stakeholder meeting with trans and non-binary students and staff to provide feedback on initial draft of campus policy on lived name and gender marker.
  • February 2022: Draft of a campus policy on Lived Name and Gender Marker presented to committee for review.
  • February 2022: Action Groups launched to advance work: Student Rights Toolkit, Employee Rights Toolkit, Best Practices Guidelines, Training, Marketing and Communication
  • March 2022: Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion agreed to host the campus policy on Lived Name and Gender Marker
  • Fall 2022: Launched “LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in the Workplace” Training with updates on the UC Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy
  • February 2023: IET is collaborating with the university registrar on student systems implementation
  • March 2023: Launched Gender Recognition & Lived Name Initiative and Resources websites
  • April 2023: UC Davis Health IT has completed its assessment phase of data and IT systems

Projected Timeline for Outstanding Initiative Implementation Items

  • Spring 2023: The Trans Students’ Rights and Best Practices Toolkits are being finalized and will be added to the GRLN Resources website
  • Summer 2023: UC Davis will submit a progress report on campus implementation to UC Office of the President
  • Summer 2023: UC plans to launch a systemwide training on the Gender Recognition and Lived Name policy in the employee Learning Management System
  • June 30, 2023: UC Path is working to fix name field issues by this date, so that downstream employee systems can begin implementing lived name
  • December 31, 2023: Deadline to implement lived name and gender identity fields in student systems
  • June 30, 2024: Deadline to implement lived name and gender identity fields in employee systems
