Advising for Equity Administrative Advisory Committee
Contact: Chair-Kayton Carter, kaycarter@ucdavis.edu
Overview: Advising for Equity represents a new administrative advisory committee for the UC Davis campus. The committee serves as a mechanism to address institutional racism and inequities tied to advising. In alignment with the “To Boldly Go” campus strategic vision, particularly Strategic Plan Goal 3, as well as the goals of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Strategic Vision, we aim to shape change that centers upon equity in advising to impact the academic success and wellbeing of our students and campus community. We seek to surface problematic advising practices and academic policies that disproportionately hinder students from marginalized communities. We also seek to narrow opportunity gaps by taking steps to construct or reconstruct advising systems, structures, and policies - and root them in equity
Charge: In acknowledgement of institutional racism, as well as inequitable policies and practices at UC Davis, this committee is charged to: Identify structures related to advising that perpetuate racism, exclusion, and inequity; Ascertain & Expose gaps or harmful practices in or related to advising that result in racial disparities, exclusion, and inequity; Dismantle inequitable advising structures, practices, and policies; and Build/Rebuild advising structures, practices, and policies centered upon equity.
