You're invited to join us for an engaging book talk "Faith Made Flesh: The Black Legacy Campaign for Transformative Justice and Health Futures" featuring Professor Lawrence "Torry" Winn and Professor Maisha Winn, with special guests, Dr. Vajra Watson and SAYS Director Patrice Hill, who will share their unique insights into the themes explored within the book. The focus of the presentation is "Sacramento Matters: Exploring Community-University Partnerships". This panel will discuss the role of the university in fostering healthy relationships with historically marginalized communities.
“Faith Made Flesh: The Black Child Legacy Campaign for Transformative Justice and Healthy Futures" brings together the experience, insight, and stories of those actively addressing societal and educational disadvantages of Black children in Sacramento, California. The authors seek to offer viable solutions to racial injustice by centering the voices of organizers, policymakers, educators, scholars, and young people alike.
Focused on the Black Child Legacy Campaign (BCLC), a ten-year community-driven initiative to respond to disproportionate health outcomes, the contributors analyze the impact of the BCLC's successes, providing an empirically rich narrative of its transformative alliances and radical actions. Through timely and urgent case studies and personal reflections, this book advances the need to address societal challenges through creative engagement with diverse institutional and individual stakeholders. The findings offer an innovative model to other regions aiming to cultivate thriving community-city-school partnerships that center the well-being of Black children and Black futures.
Following the discussion, we'll transition into a lively mixer with food, music, community, and fun hosted by the UC Davis African American Faculty and Staff Association. You may also take the opportunity to explore the exhibitions on display at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.
