Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens is a historian and reproductive rights advocate. She has published both scholarly and popular pieces on issues that concern African American historical experiences ranging from slavery to contemporary reproductive justice. Her recent publications include "Harriet Tubman's Disability and Why it Matters" for Ms. Magazine and Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology (UGA Press, 2017). 

As a special treat, Professor Cooper Owens donated copies of her book, Medical Bondage. We will distribute them to students who would like a copy at the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
