Through this series, we reach out to race scholars in and outside of law who can help us deepen the ways we think about legal and policy reforms.

"PROMOTIVE AND INHIBITIVE OUTCOMES AMONG BLACK GIRLS IN CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS: A CIVIL RIGHTS DATA COLLECTION EXPLORATORY STUDY"

Black girls are often disproportionately discIplined and underexposed to academic opportunities (e.g., gifted education) that support thelr hollstic well-belng. Using the CIvil RIghts Data Collection, we examine proportionality and disproportionality in promotive and inhlbitive outcomes among Black girls in schools and districts throughout Callfornla. Through preliminary exploratory analyses, we consider outcomes among Black girls covered under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and examine disparities based on school district-level socioeconomics. We discuss Implications for policy and practice, and the Importance of equity research In California at the Intersection of race, gender, ability status, and socioeconomics.

DR. FAHEEMAH N. MUSTAFAA

Assistant Professor of Education

Dr. Faheemah N. Mustafaa loined the School of Education as an assistant professor In 2019. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on: (1) supporting academic performance and holistic well-being of Black and other youth with historically marginalized Identities; and (2) studying the Identity-related beliefs and pedagogies of K-12 and postsecondary educators. Currently, Dr. Mustafaa Is PI of an American Instititutes for Research grant focused on Black girls' well-belng in Callfornla, and Co-PI on a $2.4M National Sclence Foundation (NSF) grant to study the experlences of Black girls and college women in a robotics and engineering program.

TADRIA CARDENAS RICO

4th year PhD student, School Organization and Education Policy

Tadria Cardenas was born In Mexico City and immigrated with her famlly when she was 5 years old. She grew up in San Bernardino, Callfornla and Is now a 4th year PhD student at the University of Callfornla, Davls. Tadria's research interests include exploring science Identity development and understanding the educational experiences of Black and Latinx students in STEM education. She has three dogs and loves golng on adventures with them.

KIARA JONES

4th year undergraduate in Sociology, with honors

Klara Is a fourth-year undergraduate student at UC Davis majoring in Sociology. For her honors thesls, she is researching peer Interactions among adolescents and thelr secondary soclallzation experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. When she is not on campus working with student organizations she enjoys creating all art and baking.
